Arkwright Town railway station is a former railway station in Arkwright Town, Derbyshire.

History

Opened by the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway in March 1897, and joining the Great Central Railway it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway during the Grouping of 1923. The station then passed on to British Railways on nationalisation in 1948, only to be closed in 1951.

It was originally to have been called Duckmanton, but the Staveley Company objected.[1] Just to the east of the station was the connecting curve installed in 1907 by the Great Central Railway. A mile further east was Markham Junction for the, now closed, Bolsover and Markham Number 1 collieries.

The next station was Bolsover after crossing the River Doe Lea by a viaduct which, though strongly built, suffered from coal mining subsidence, as did many of the lines in the area.
